The 2023 Bechthold Vineyard Cinsault is ruby red with aromas of baking spices and strawberry pie. Bright on the palate with plum skin, cherries, cardamon, cinnamon and clove. Beams of acidity carry the delicate tannins and brambly layers to a mouth-watering finish. Honestly, we can't get enough of this wine.
VINEYARD: Cinsault is not widely planted in California. This historic, organically farmed, 12 acre vineyard was planted in 1886 on its own roots in sandy alluvial soil on the west side of the Mokelumne River. This land in the previous century was planted to watermelons which charmingly appear as legacy volunteers between the gnarled vines just before harvest. Since 2009 we've loved this fruit component in our Rosé. The 2023 is already our third vintage of red wine from these gnarled old vines.
WINEMAKING: We pulled fruit from our section of the vineyard on the morning of September 6th with two dear friends both named Max. Gently de-stemmed fruit was joined by a hefty layer of whole clusters for a native fermentation in an open top stainless steel tank. The wine was aged in neutral French oak and stainless steel for 9 months.
